The Young and the Restless (Y&R) spoilers reveal that fans have been noticing some major differences between the classic episodes and the brand-new ones we’re all used to. Of course, one of the most noticeable differences is the wardrobe! Times have changed and so have the fashions on The Young and the Restless.
In a recent issue of Soap Opera Digest, Y&R Costume Designer David Zyla opened up about his overall style vision for the show. Zyla also broke down what he’s going for with a few specific characters. Here’s what Zyla had to say about all the fashions that fans see each day.
Zyla suggested that they want to create a sense of “heightened realism” at The Young and the Restless. That’s why characters might be a bit overdressed for running errands. They take it just a hint further than what someone would normally be wearing.
It’s all part of developing an “aspirational quality,” which incorporates another important element of the wardrobe department. They work with smaller design companies in an effort to be more forward-thinking with their fashions. The goal is to be ahead of the game and not have what’s in stores right this second.
As for the characters, their looks are as individual as they are! For Sharon Newman (Sharon Case), Zyla likes to go for fresh colors with a mild boho vibe. There are also some European influences, and they aren’t shy about adding lots of jewelry. “She dresses to reflect how she feels each day,” Zyla said.
When it comes to Amanda Sinclair (Mishael Morgan), her look has evolved since Morgan first appeared in the role. What started out as plain and practical became a wardrobe that’s sleeker with more variety.
For Phyllis Summers (Michelle Stafford), it’s all about the theatrical! Like Phyllis herself, her wardrobe is loud and dramatic.
With Nikki Newman (Melody Thomas Scott), Zyla talked about making sure she truly seems wealthy. Y&R’s wardrobe team works to make Nikki look upscale – like someone who has really good taste.
Tessa Porter (Cait Fairbanks) is one character that Zyla has a lot of fun selecting styles for. Since Tessa’s a singer-songwriter, Zyla goes for the eclectic. They try to give Tessa a “quirky mix” that’s a little rock and roll at times.
Finally, there’s Summer Newman (Hunter King). Zyla discussed how he likes a relaxed ‘70s vibe, so everything’s soft and flowy. Although the team gets many of Summer’s dresses from Europe, they’re not afraid to throw in some fringe and make it “cowgirl chic.”
